Emergency Medical Technician

(EMT)

 

EMT course content includes patient assessment skills, basic airway management,  use of the Automatic External Defibrillator and stabilization of the trauma patient.  

 

A course completion certificate for 168 hours is awarded. 

 

 

 

Prerequisites

Students must be eighteen years old and have no felony convictions. Must provide proof of personal healthcare insurance.

You must provide proof of immunization documentation at the time of registration.

Your immunization record must include; Measles, mumps, rubella, Hepatitis B, and PPD for tuberculosis to register for the EMT course.

 

EMT Course Description:
The EMT course content includes patient assessment skills, basic airway management, use of the Automatic External Defibrillator, and stabilization of the trauma patient. Recognition and management of bleeding and shock, a cardiac event, or other medical emergency; including childbirth and care of the pediatric patient, is presented in lecture and skills practice for proficiency. Recognition and management of a patient with a traumatic injury is presented in lecture and with skills practice for proficiency, with various treatment modalities including: traction splints, application of bandages, and spinal immobilization techniques. A HealthCare Provider CPR card to the most current standards of the American Heart Association is included in this course.

Local ambulance companies are invited for demonstrations of patient care devices, for orientation to an ambulance, and for recruitment opportunities.

Observation time with patient care experience in a clinical setting, or on an ambulance is required to complete the EMT course. A course completion certificate for 168 hours is awarded. 

Class Uniform:
Navy Blue Polo shirt with school logo ($25) per shirt (may purchase at the Academy)
Black boots or shoes with hard sole (black tennis shoes ok, no sandals)

Acceptable Attire:
Navy Blue polo shirt with no emblem
Black or navy blue uniform pants

California EMS Academy is affiliated with Palo Verde College in Southern California to offer EMT for college credit. The coordinating agency is:  The Industrial Emergency Council, San Carlos , CA    Website:  www.iectraining.org

Palo Verde College   offers 5.5 semester units for EMT Training.

Tests/Quizzes:

Minimum passing score on each quiz and exam is 80%

Must pass a National Registry (NREMT) skills practical.

EMT Accelerated COURSE

The Accelerated EMT course is an intensive 6 week course.

The Accelerated EMT course is extremely fast paced.  All lecture classes, labs, and ambulance experience time, require mandatory attendance. Class/Lab attendance is checked daily.  Twenty-four (24) hours of missed class time will result in termination from the program.

CPR/AED for healthcare providers

Designed for Healthcare Providers; EMS Personnel, Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Public Safety, and others who wish to become a healthcare professional. This course introduces the most current American Heart Association (AHA) ECC Guidelines for Healthcare Providers. This course also addresses the AHA's March 2008 "Advisory Statement", Hands-Only CPR - a call to action for bystander response to adults who experience out of hospital sudden cardiac arrest. Continuing Education for Healthcare professionals is awarded.

EmT Refresher Course

Review of EMT course content  and skills practice. The EMT skills practical exam is on the last day of class and is open to those who only need the skills practical for EMT renewal.

The minimum passing standard is 80% on a written exam and successful performance of NREMT skills. At the conclusion of this course, a completion certificate for 24 hours of EMT continuing education and a skills verification form is awarded.
